Port of Oakland

UX Design, Front-end Development, Project Management

March 2022 – Ongoing

Complete re-design and re-build of three highly visible, public-facing websites for the Oakland Airport, Seaport, and The Port of Oakland. From initial wireframing to front-end development, I played a central role in shaping the user experience and functionality of all three sites.

Our work led to a 30% average increase in site traffic across all three sites, with the Airport’s most profitable revenue source—paid parking—growing by 28%.

Wireframing

UX Design

I collaborated with MIG’s Art Director, Gary Pyskacek, to create comprehensive, interactive wireframes in Adobe XD. These were built upon newly developed information architecture and key user journeys identified during the research phase. My contributions included building key interactions, designing highly visible pages, and organizing clearly labeled component states in XD. These wireframes showcased new functionality, including filtering, sorting, a robust mega menu system, and multiple homepage options for all three sites.

Following several rounds of internal and client revisions, the finalized wireframes served as the foundation for high-fidelity mockups and guided the development of all three websites.

Front-end Development

Implementing the chosen design

Using WordPress as the chosen CMS, Elementor as the primary plugin, and Pantheon as our hosting service I collaborated with back-end engineers to build the suite of websites with security and accessibility as the primary concern during development. All three sites are complete with a robust site search, custom faceted search and filter functions, and dynamic templates, and are fully responsive across all screen sizes.

Templates were the first assets to be developed alongside the site homepages, headers, and footers. These templates were then re-used across all three sites in order to speed development.

Pre-launch, all sites were developed on development servers and reviewed by the client on our test server. Changes were stored in GIT, committed via Pantheon, and merged up to the test server via command line scripts.

Post-launch Support

Project Management

After the site's successful launch in June 2024, I became the main point of contact for the client, managing support tickets, communicating via Zendesk, and overseeing post-launch support. I collaborate with colleagues to resolve issues, maintain security through regular audits, and create documentation for self-publishing features.
